The Facts on Oilheat – Get ‘Em Here!
According to the American Petroleum Institute (API), close to 9 million American households rely on oilheat. And even though we’ve recently wrapped up the winter heating season, it’s never too early to start thinking about next year’s heating options. In fact, for consumers who are looking to make a switch in how they heat their home, the summer is the best time to consider your choices.
Here are a few facts to keep in mind when comparing oilheat to other energy options, like natural gas:
Cost:
Let’s face it, cost is a concern, and rightfully so. Unfortunately there’s no crystal ball, but the Energy Communication Council cites the following factors that could drive up the price of natural gas in both the short term and the long term. Combined with high conversion costs of up to $10,000, these factors paint a very uncertain picture about the consumer’s ability to save money by converting from oilheat to natural gas.
- History shows that the price of fossil fuels track one another fairly closely. When the price of oil climbs, the price of natural gas closes the gap; likewise, when the price of natural gas goes up, the price of oil follows.
- With the price of natural gas at a historic low, major industrial users such as power plants, are converting from coal to natural gas. According to data obtained from the EIA, natural gas used for power generation rose 7% between 2009 and 2010. Those numbers continue to climb.
- Natural gas companies are moving to export large quantities of natural gas overseas to Europe and Japan where natural gas commands a higher price. The federal Department of Energy is currently considering applications from American natural gas companies that would allow them to export as much as 16 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. Should these permits be granted, the EIA estimates that the average consumer’s gas bill could increase, depending on how much is actually exported.
- The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the Chesapeake Energy Corp., the nation’s second-largest producer of natural gas, announced that it would cut daily production by 8%. The paper noted that, “the move is designed to reduce the glut of natural gas in the U.S., and therefore increase prices.”
Safety:
Oilheat is an extremely safe choice when it comes to heating your home! Did you know:
- Oilheat will not burn in a liquid state. In fact, if you drop a lit match into a tank of oilheat, it will go out! It won’t burn unless it’s preheated to 140 degrees.
- It’s non-carcinogenic and non-explosive, unlike natural gas. If a natural gas leak occurs in a home, or there’s a gas line rupture under a neighborhood street, dangerous and sometimes deadly explosions can happen.
- There are clear and early warning signs like smoke or soot if an oilheating system malfunction occurs. The danger signs aren’t always as clear or timely when it comes to natural gas. Poisonous carbon monoxide fumes can be emitted during a system malfunction – and without the homeowner’s knowledge. This is because of carbon monoxide’s colorless and odorless characteristics.
Environment
According to the American Energy Coalition, there is currently no renewable substitute for natural gas in widespread deployment. Oilheat, however, has a renewable alternative called Bioheat, which is comprised of a blend of traditional oilheat and biofuel made from plants and food byproducts. New offerings like Bioheat make oilheat even friendlier to the environment! In addition to Bioheat, Tevis Energy also offers lower-sulfur heating oil, which will save you some bucks and lessen the build-up of sulfur residue in your system.
Price Flexibility
Unlike many giant utility companies, oilheat service providers will offer discounts, credits, referral programs and even flexible budget programs to help customers easily manage their bill payments. Larger utility companies are traditionally more rigid in their pricing and bill payment structures and just don’t offer the flexibility and options that many oilheat suppliers do. Tevis Energy offers several payment options for our customers – visit our website to see what we offer.
Customer Service
It’s a fact – oilheat customers are happy customers! Industry research finds that 95% of oilheat users are happy with the overall service they receive from their supplier, and it’s easy to see why. Many suppliers are smaller, local, family-owned businesses (like Tevis Energy!) that have been around for years and have serviced the same neighborhoods and same families for decades. Customers get personal, quality service that puts their happiness and satisfaction first. That can be hard to find with larger utility companies (that probably know you by an account number, not your name!)
If you find yourself considering a new home heating option in the upcoming months, keep these handy oilheat facts in mind. And give Tevis Energy a call anytime – our team is here and always ready to share our knowledge with you!
Let the Sunshine In!

It is always nice change this time of year to see the days getting longer and sunshine getting brighter! Not only is this very good for our souls, the sun’s extra warmth provides yet another opportunity during this usually mild winter to turn back the thermostat and keep that precious heating oil in our tanks a little longer than normal!
For rooms in your home that don’t get much sun, consider a portable heater for just the room you’re using. This may also allow you to cut your oil use even more, as we finish out the heating season. And because Tevis fortifies its heating oil with T2000, the oil that remains in your tank at the end of this season will do just as good a job heating your home next season!
So pull back the curtains and let the sunshine in!
What’s up with oil and gas prices?

Despite the record warm winter this season, heating oil and gasoline prices are approaching season highs. This leaves many people asking the same question: Why?!
While there are many market conditions that affect oil prices, Tevis Energy would like to keep our customers as informed as possible. Here are some of the factors attributing to the current conditions and also some factors that might help lower prices.
What’s causing the prices to rise?
1. Tensions and political unrest in major oil producing regions
- Middle East and North Africa (MENA)
- Specifically Iran and their affect on the entire region
- About 1/3 of the world’s oil is produced in the region
- About 2/3’s of the worlds known oil reserves are there
2. Increased demand in developing/emerging economies
- China, India = more people using oil
3. Investors increasing their positions in oil and energy markets.
Reasons Why:
- Investors see a higher probability of higher energy prices in the near future – potentially earning them a greater return in the future
- MENA (as mentioned in #1 above)
- Belief in a global economic recovery and increased energy demand
4. Refinery closures and refinery maintenance trouble across North and South America have caused prices to rise in the short term
5. Greek debt crisis is beginning to look more stable (at the moment), and markets are gaining some confidence.
Energy prices could fall if…
1. Tensions between Iran and Israel subside
2. Economic recovery becomes less apparent, however…
- High energy prices could slow energy demand and recovery
- Greek debt default would hurt credit markets and economic activity in Europe
3. Fewer investors believe energy prices will continue to rise, and begin exiting their oil investments
4. Increase in supply availability
- New supply discovery across the globe **
- New production from shale reserves and horizontal drilling techniques in the upper Midwest and Canada
5. Permanent lowering of demand
- Alternative energy
- Improved efficiency
** The above is a brief assessment of current market conditions. It is not a prediction of future price direction. Any current news (including or in addition to the above) will cause changes in market and price direction. One or more of these news factors changing and becoming more or less dominant can produce entirely different outcomes.**

Heating Degree Days: How they affect your Oil Delivery
Everyone likes to talk about the weather, but here at Tevis Energy the weather plays a BIG part in how we take care of our customers. It’s our job to track forecasts and analyze yearly weather trends in order to determine when heating oil should be delivered to our automatic delivery customers. How do we do it? By calculating something called, “heating degree days.”
A heating degree day or HDD is calculated by using a normal temperature of 65 degrees. On any given day, the low and high temperatures are averaged and then subtracted from 65 to determine how many degrees occurred in that 24-hour period. So, if the low for the day is 30 degrees, and the high is 40 degrees, the average would be 35 so the heating degree days would have a value of 30 (65-35 = 30).
Everyone’s oil usage is different, so Tevis tracks each customer’s usage patterns and compares them to heating degree days (HDDs). Using this proven method, we can very accurately predict when customers will need their next oil delivery. We even guarantee it!
While the colder temperatures play a big part in how much oil is consumed, there are other factors that should be considered. For instance, if a customer is using a heat pump or pellet/wood stove, that will significantly reduce their oil usage. Any additional or alternate heating sources will reduce the number of oil deliveries needed, so it’s important to let Tevis Energy know.
Here are some other factors that might change your oil consumption:
- Replacing/upgrading old windows, doors, and insulation - reduces the amount of cold air coming into your home
- Don’t let the cold air in! - if someone is making frequent trips inside and out of your home it will affect your home’s temperate and oil consumption
- Additions or other home improvement projects - adding in to your home will change your oil consumption and heating needs
- Extra guests - if an in-law moves in or if college kids are home for break, extra heat (and hot water) will be used.
Interested in signing up for our automatic delivery option? You can save $100 over the course of a year if you sign up now!
Thanksgiving Update!
As Thanksgiving approaches, the Tevis Energy team would like to say THANK YOU to all of our customers! We truly appreciate your business. Read below for information on the upcoming temperatures for the holiday weekend, and tips to save.
Please note that our office will be closed on Thursday so our employees can spend time with their family and friends. We are still available for any emergency heating needs that may arise. Just call 1-866-TEVIS-OIL toll free from MD or PA. (Call 410-876-6800 from other states you may be visiting.)
Thanksgiving Temperatures
So far, average temperatures in the Mid Atlantic region are 2% warmer than last year, and over 15% warmer than seasonal averages. Temperatures are expected to remain mild in our region through Thanksgiving weekend! Source: NOAA cumulative Heating Degree Days (HDDs)
As a result, your heat usage should be similar to this time last year. Any heating oil or propane usage significantly less than last year could be a direct result of something you did to conserve energy. (Way to go! Please share your conservation tips in the comments below!) If you have used more heating oil than last year, it might be a sign your furnace is not running at its full efficiency and is in need of a tune-up. If so, give us a call to schedule a tune-up before it does get cold and your usage really starts to increase!
A Thanksgiving Did You Know
Did you know that people give off about 18 BTU per hour? So between the oven, dinner guests, and mild outdoor temperatures, you may be able to turning your heat off on Thanksgiving!
Thanksgiving Travel
The media reports that 42 million people are planning on traveling over Thanksgiving. Are you one of them? If so, remember that wet weather and leaves on roads can make for hazardous driving conditions. Watch your speed on blind curves and approaching intersections. You are important to us! Please reach ALL of your destinations, and return home, SAFELY!!
Happy Thanksgiving from the entire Tevis Team!
